North Myrtle Beach to Open Cypress Nook Disc Golf Course on June 26

The City of North Myrtle Beach will open Cypress Nook Disc Golf Course to the public on Friday, June 26, with a 10:00 a.m. grand opening ceremony at the North Myrtle Beach Park & Sports Complex — adding an 18-hole wooded course to a 160-acre recreation campus that already draws athletes and families from across the region.

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH — The North Myrtle Beach Park & Sports Complex is getting its first disc golf course. Cypress Nook, a free, publicly accessible 18-hole layout threaded through a wooded section of the 150 Citizens Circle campus, will hold its grand opening ceremony this Friday at 10:00 a.m. Members of the public are invited to attend and play the course on opening day.

Parks and Recreation Director Matt Gibbons described Cypress Nook as a unique addition to the recreational opportunities available in North Myrtle Beach, noting that the natural terrain and wooded environment are expected to create a memorable playing experience that attracts both local players and visitors to the area.

The course winds through a canopy of ancient cypress and slender slash pines, with significant elevation changes that add a vertical dimension to shot selection unusual for this stretch of South Carolina’s coastal plain. Fairways are consistently narrow, with tight margins that reward placement and precision over raw throwing distance. The layout is technical by design — a course that asks players to read lines through tree coverage and commit to controlled throws rather than simply throwing as far as possible.

Two layouts, one course

Cypress Nook features dual tee boxes on each hole: Main Tee Boxes for experienced players and Beginner/Jr. Tee Boxes that shorten distances and reduce technical difficulty for newer players and younger participants. The dual-tee structure allows the same 18 holes to serve competitive disc golfers and first-time players simultaneously without either group disrupting the other’s pace of play.

Play is governed by PDGA Official Game Rules. Course signage follows standard disc golf conventions, including Mando markers indicating mandatory direction of play, OB markers denoting out-of-bounds areas, Drop Zone indicators for alternate throw points, and Cart Drop signs marking where motorized carts may not proceed. The course is mapped on the UDisc app for score tracking and navigation.

Access and rules

Parking and access to Hole No. 1 are available from the soccer parking lot near the Segway Building at the Sports Complex. Restroom facilities and a picnic shelter are located on the course grounds. Summer hours for the complex run from 6:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Admission is free.

Course rules prohibit alcohol, glass containers, tobacco products, motorized vehicles other than at designated points, and weapons of any kind. Pets must be leashed. Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult. Players are asked to observe standard course etiquette: hold throws until the fairway is clear, yield to faster groups, stay on marked paths rather than walking the fairways, and carry out all trash — no receptacles are located on the course itself.

The addition of Cypress Nook extends a period of significant investment at the Sports Complex. The city completed a $36 million, 90-acre expansion of the facility earlier this year, doubling its baseball and softball capacity and drawing 70 teams from 14 states to its first expanded-field tournament in February 2026. Disc golf represents a different recreational category — free, unscheduled, open to walk-in players of any age — and broadens the complex’s appeal beyond organized team sports.
