Brookgreen Gardens Unveils $17M Conservatory, Bringing Year-Round Experiences to Murrells Inlet
A beloved Lowcountry treasure is entering a new era of beauty and accessibility. Brookgreen Gardens, located just south of Myrtle Beach in scenic Murrells Inlet, is turning heads once again—this time with the construction of a $17 million Welcome Center and Conservatory designed to elevate the visitor experience and connect even more deeply with the region’s natural charm.
Slated for completion by the end of 2025, the new Purdy Center blends botanical brilliance with thoughtful design. Guests will be welcomed by a 5,500-square-foot Great Hall featuring soaring 30-foot ceilings, seasonal floral displays, tropical plant collections, and an expansive wall of over 2,000 orchids. Natural light will flood the space through a series of skylights, creating a serene indoor garden setting year-round.
Designed to serve as both an educational hub and event venue, the new conservatory will seat up to 250 guests and offer a weather-protected space for weddings, private gatherings, and programs. A coffee bar and landscaped courtyard will add to the atmosphere, giving visitors a relaxing spot to gather before heading off into the sculpture and botanical gardens.
One of the most exciting features is the Gaia Walk—a beautifully accessible ramp that spirals around a striking bronze sculpture and leads to an elevated veranda. From this overlook, guests can enjoy panoramic views of the iconic Fountain of the Muses and the Pegasus statue beyond, especially at sunset.
As a National Historic Landmark and one of the most celebrated gardens in the country, Brookgreen’s continued evolution ensures its relevance for generations to come. The Purdy Center is part of a broader vision that includes future plans for a butterfly pavilion and a wetlands garden.
For those staying with Thomas Beach Vacations, this spectacular addition makes a day trip to Brookgreen even more rewarding. Whether you’re planning a wedding, enjoying a family getaway, or simply seeking a quiet moment in nature, this new conservatory promises to be a highlight of any Grand Strand visit.
