Myrtle Beach World Amateur 2026

World Am Week Arrives: 3,000 Golfers Descend on the Grand Strand August 31

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — August 16, 2026

By Thomas Beach Vacations News Desk

The 43rd annual Play Golf Myrtle Beach World Amateur Handicap Championship tees off August 31 with a sold-out field of 3,000 players, more than 50 host courses from Pawleys Island to the North Carolina line, and the return of the nightly party known as the World’s Largest 19th Hole.

The biggest amateur golf tournament on the planet is about to take over the Grand Strand again. The 43rd annual Play Golf Myrtle Beach World Amateur Handicap Championship runs Monday, August 31 through Friday, September 4, 2026, sending a capacity field of 3,000 golfers across more than 50 courses along the coast — and this year, the field is officially full. Registration closed August 7 once the tournament reached its player cap, locking in another sellout for an event that has become the unofficial bridge between summer beach season and fall golf season in the Golf Capital of the World.

The scale of the thing takes some explaining to first-time observers. For four straight days, players tee off simultaneously up and down 60 miles of coastline, each competitor playing a different course every day. The 72-hole, net stroke play format sorts golfers into 12 divisions and more than 60 flights by age, gender, and verified handicap, so a 22-year-old scratch player and a 75-year-old weekend golfer both have a real path to hardware. Flight winners then advance to the Championship Round on Friday, September 4 at Grande Dunes Resort Course, a one-day shootout that crowns the 2026 World Amateur Champion.

Last year’s edition drew more than 2,900 players from 47 states and 18 countries, and organizers expect this year’s full field to look just as global. Play Golf Myrtle Beach marketing director Kyle Oland has described the event as more than a tournament — a gathering built at the intersection of competition, community, and connection that pulls the worldwide golf community into a single destination for a week.

The World’s Largest 19th Hole Returns — With a New Welcome Party

What separates the World Am from every other tournament its size is what happens after the scorecards are signed. Each evening, the Myrtle Beach Convention Center transforms into the World’s Largest 19th Hole, a 120,000-square-foot party featuring open bars, food from a lineup of the area’s top restaurants, live bands, a golf exposition, and enough storytelling to fill a winter’s worth of group chats. Every registered player receives nightly entry for themselves and a guest, and the golf creator group St. André Golf returns in 2026 to host the festivities after a crowd-favorite debut. Special guests slated to appear include South Carolina natives George and Wesley Bryan of Bryan Bros fame.

New for 2026, the tournament’s Welcome Party moves to Ole Smoky Distillery and Yee-Haw Brewing Company, the sprawling moonshine-and-craft-beer destination that opened this year at Broadway at the Beach. The opening celebration includes a ceremony recognizing past champions in attendance along with prize drawings — a fitting handoff between one of the Grand Strand’s newest attractions and one of its longest-running traditions.

What World Am Week Means for North Myrtle Beach

The tournament’s course rotation reaches deep into the North Strand, where marquee layouts such as the Barefoot Resort courses in North Myrtle Beach regularly host tournament rounds alongside celebrated names farther south like Caledonia and True Blue. For visitors who are here that week without a tee time, the practical effect is a town humming at full golf capacity: rental SUVs with travel bags in the back, foursomes comparing scorecards over oysters, and tee sheets filled during what is traditionally a quieter stretch of the calendar before Labor Day weekend.

For the players themselves — and the spouses, friends, and families who travel with them — North Myrtle Beach has long been a favorite home base. The Cherry Grove Beach section sits minutes from the courses clustered around Little River and the state line, while Ocean Drive, Crescent Beach, and Windy Hill put the beach outside the door and the full spread of tournament venues within an easy morning drive. An oceanfront home rental gives a traveling golf group room to spread out for the week, and oceanfront condos suit the player-plus-guest pairs who make the annual pilgrimage.

The timing also lands in one of the best travel windows of the year. The tournament wraps just as the summer crowds thin, the ocean stays warm, and the fall events season begins across the area — a stretch our guides to things to do in Myrtle Beach and the Myrtle Beach events calendar cover in detail. Golfers flying in with their clubs can find airline policies, nonstop routes, and ground transportation tips in our golfer’s guide to Myrtle Beach International Airport.

Missed the Field? There Is Always Next Year — and Plenty of Golf Now

With the 2026 field at capacity, hopeful late entrants can join an alternate list through the tournament’s official site at myrtlebeachworldamateur.com, where organizers contact players as spots open. Registration for the 2027 edition typically opens the following spring, with past participants getting the first window and early rates.

And for golfers inspired to plan their own trip, the courses themselves are open all week to the public around tournament play. The Grand Strand’s roughly 90 layouts mean that even during World Am week, a visiting foursome can build a first-rate itinerary — and families can point toward events like Family Golf Week each July or the summer-long Kids Play Free program to turn a beach vacation into a golf tradition of their own.
