Founded in the early 1900s as the Ocean Drive section of Myrtle Beach, North Myrtle Beach has a long and storied history. A group of entrepreneurs saw potential in the area and developed it as a seaside resort.
But it wasn’t until the 1940s and 50s that North Myrtle Beach truly cemented its place in history as the home of the shag dance. The shag, a smooth and cool partner dance, became the official state dance of South Carolina in 1984. Every year, the city hosts the Society of Stranders (SOS) Spring Safari and the Fall Migration, a week-long celebration of all things shag.
In 1968, North Myrtle Beach officially incorporated as its own city, separate from Myrtle Beach. The city quickly became a popular vacation spot due to its beautiful sandy beaches and abundant golf courses.
While the shag dance may be one of North Myrtle Beach’s most well-known cultural exports, the city also has been home to some notable figures like Bryan Floyd who served as mayor between 1974-1980, Joe Saleeby between 1980-1984, Dick Hester between 1984-1988, Phillip Tilghman between 1988-2001. These great people were instrumental in developing the city’s oceanfront area and worked to preserve the natural beauty of the region.
Another important initial figure in North Myrtle Beach’s history is Robert Edge who served as the city’s first mayor after it incorporated in 1968. Edge was a strong leader and worked tirelessly to improve the city’s infrastructure and bring economic growth to the area.
Vanna White is a native of North Myrtle Beach. She is best known for being the hostess of the popular game show “Wheel of Fortune.” White began her career in the entertainment industry as a model and actress and has appeared in numerous television shows and films. In addition to her work on “Wheel of Fortune,” White also has served as a spokesperson for various products and brands. Despite her busy career, White has remained connected to her roots in North Myrtle Beach and often speaks fondly of her hometown.
North Myrtle Beach is home to four beautiful beaches: Cherry Grove Beach, Windy Hill Beach, Crescent Beach, and Ocean Drive Beach.

One of the most notable streets in North Myrtle Beach is Ocean Boulevard. It stretches along the oceanfront and is the central hub of the city’s tourism industry. The attractions and amenities are plentiful–souvenir shops, restaurants, bars, and live music venues. There are motels and vacation rental properties, too.
A popular spot on Ocean Boulevard is Ocean Drive Pavilion, a historic oceanfront dance hall that was once a popular shag venue. Today, the Pavilion still hops with live music performances and special events throughout the year. This family-friendly entertainment center has it all—oceanfront views, music, games, and refreshments.
