Vietnam Veterans’ Memorial Breaks Ground in Myrtle Beach

Myrtle Beach is preparing to welcome a long-anticipated tribute as construction begins on a new Vietnam Veterans’ Memorial in The Market Common at Warbird Park. The project marks a significant milestone for the community and honors the service and sacrifice of Vietnam-era veterans.

More than 500 residents and veterans attended the recent groundbreaking ceremony, reflecting strong public support for the memorial. City leaders and organizers emphasized that the project is intended to recognize a group of veterans who historically did not receive the public appreciation afforded to other generations of service members.

The memorial will feature an eight-foot, multi-sided wall, a reflecting pool, and a landscaped memorial garden. The entrance will display a “Welcome Home” message, symbolizing the recognition many Vietnam veterans were denied upon returning from service. The site is expected to be largely completed before Memorial Day weekend.

Warbird Park, located at the heart of The Market Common, already serves as a center for military remembrance in Myrtle Beach, housing a World War II memorial and aircraft exhibits from the former Myrtle Beach Air Force Base. The addition of the Vietnam Veterans’ Memorial fills a longstanding gap in the city’s historical landscape.

The Myrtle Beach Air Force Base Redevelopment Authority contributed $600,000 to the project, with additional funding provided by local donors. Planning began early last year with direct input from area veterans’ organizations, helping shape both the design and purpose of the memorial.

The memorial will be illuminated at night and will include engraved imagery, sculptural elements, and educational components. Stone benches will provide space for quiet reflection and connection. The project reflects Myrtle Beach’s commitment to honoring military history and preserving the legacy of those who served.
