October in North Myrtle Beach has a sound of its own. The surf is still warm enough for a late swim, the summer crowds have thinned, and by mid-afternoon on a Saturday you can hear a cheer roll out of an open bar door somewhere along Highway 17. Football season has a way of following people to the beach, and the town is well set up for it.

Plenty of fall visitors come for a long weekend of sand and seafood and still refuse to miss their team. Snowbirds settle in for the season with a Sunday routine already in mind. Golf groups finish their rounds and want somewhere with cold beer, hot wings and a screen in every direction. The good news is that North Myrtle Beach has a wonderful mix of places to watch, from wood-paneled neighborhood bars to lakeside patios at Barefoot Landing.

We checked the addresses below against current listings so they are ready to use. Game-day hours and specials change from week to week, so a quick call before kickoff is always a good idea.

Classic Neighborhood Sports Bars

Oscar’s Food & Spirits

Oscar’s is the kind of place regulars describe as their living room. It sits on Highway 17 South near the Windy Hill end of town, and it has been feeding North Myrtle Beach for decades. Destination North Myrtle Beach lists it among the area’s top wing spots, with flavors that run from Cajun dry rub to a black-and-gold sauce that hints at the owner’s Pittsburgh roots. Steelers fans have long treated it as a home away from home, though every team’s jersey is welcome. Burgers, nachos and sandwiches round out a menu built for a long afternoon of football.

Calhoon’s 19th Hole Saloon

A little farther north on Highway 17, Calhoon’s leans into the same Pittsburgh spirit, with oversized burgers and wings tossed in sauces like a sweet Thai chili. It is a friendly, unpretentious room where strangers end up talking about third-down conversions by halftime, and it is a natural stop for golfers heading back from an afternoon round.

Dagwood’s Deli & Sports Bar

Dagwood’s opened its North Myrtle Beach location in March 2022 and quickly found an audience with locals who wanted a laid-back place to watch a game over a serious sandwich. The deli menu is the star, especially the house Dagwood’s Dipper, and the room has cozy booths with screens in view. The restaurant lists daily hours of 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., which makes it a better fit for afternoon games than late West Coast kickoffs.

Game Day at Barefoot Landing

Barefoot Landing, on the Intracoastal Waterway at the south end of town, turns a football Saturday into a whole outing. You can shop between quarters, walk the boardwalk around the lake at halftime and pick the bar that suits your mood. Our local’s guide to Barefoot Landing covers the rest of the complex.

Bully’s Pub & Grill

Bully’s is the most traditional sports bar of the Barefoot Landing group. Destination North Myrtle Beach describes it as a game-day hangout, and the menu reflects that, with burgers, seafood and wings in flavors such as hot honey and mango habanero. The long list of draft beers is a draw on its own, and it stays open late enough to catch the end of a night game.

LandShark Bar & Grill

LandShark is the place to watch a game with the sun on your face. Opened in 2021 on the lake at Barefoot Landing, it has a big patio and covered outdoor bar, frozen drinks, tacos and burgers, and frequent live music. When the game ends, the sunset over the water does the rest.

Taco Mundo Kitchen y Cantina

Taco Mundo brings a fiesta-style game-day menu to the waterway, with seafood and steak tacos, fajitas and flash-fried wings with chipotle ranch. Destination North Myrtle Beach lists a weekday Fiesta Hour from 4 to 7 p.m., which lines up nicely with Monday Night Football pregame shows. The indoor and outdoor bar looks out over the water, and on cool evenings the fireplaces make it a cozy place to linger.

When You Want to Play as Well as Watch

Some groups need more than a stool and a screen, especially families with teenagers or friends who get restless during commercial breaks. 810 Billiards & Bowling, on Highway 17 South, mixes bowling lanes, pool tables, bocce, an arcade and a full bar with local and regional craft beer. Destination North Myrtle Beach recommends it as a place to catch a game and then keep the fun going.

The Grumpy Monk, at 1409 Highway 17 South, spreads across two levels and pours a solid list of craft beers, which makes it a comfortable spot for a group that wants room to move around. For a dependable chain option with a long list of wing sauces, Buffalo Wild Wings sits at 518 Highway 17 North in the Gator Hole Plaza area, convenient to Cherry Grove and Ocean Drive. College Football Close to the Beach

College football is a big part of fall in Horry County, and the closest program to North Myrtle Beach is Coastal Carolina University, which plays at Brooks Stadium in Conway, roughly a 30-minute drive inland. According to the Chanticleers’ official schedule, the team hosts Appalachian State on Friday, October 16, at 8 p.m. on an ESPN network, followed by Old Dominion on Saturday, November 7, for homecoming and Arkansas State on Saturday, November 14, for Senior Day. Kickoff times for several games had not been announced when we checked, so confirm on the team’s website before you plan the day.

A home game makes a wonderful add-on to a fall beach week. Spend the morning on the sand, drive inland for kickoff and be back at the beach in time for a late dinner. On away weekends, any of the bars above will happily put the Chanticleers on a screen.

Just South of Town and Beyond

Visitors staying near the south end of North Myrtle Beach may also enjoy Liberty Tap Room & Grill at 7651 North Kings Highway, (843) 839-4677. It sits in the north end of Myrtle Beach, roughly a 15- to 20-minute drive south of North Myrtle Beach, and is known for its house-brewed beers, a big draft list and a menu of burgers, ribs and pizza. Our earlier guide to sports bars across the Grand Strand covers more options farther south, and our roundup of live music venues in North Myrtle Beach is handy for the nights when the game ends and you are not ready to call it.

Golfers who play the Barefoot courses before heading to the bar will appreciate our new look at the history of Barefoot Resort & Golf, which sits just across the waterway from Barefoot Landing.

Choosing Your Football-Season Home Base

Where you stay shapes the rhythm of a game-day weekend. Windy Hill puts you minutes from Barefoot Landing, Oscar’s and Dagwood’s. Crescent Beach keeps 810 Billiards & Bowling and The Grumpy Monk close by. Ocean Drive is ideal if you want to walk to Main Street after the game, and Cherry Grove offers quiet marsh views and the north end’s laid-back pace.

A big group watching a full slate of games may find it easier to host at home. Many oceanfront homes have spacious living rooms, big kitchens and decks for grilling between games, while oceanfront condos work beautifully for couples and small groups who will spend most of the game at the bar and want an easy walk to the beach afterward.
